Job Description
An Orientation Leader is a student leader position within the Beacon College community that strives to spread school spirit. Orientation Leaders play a major role in the official beginning of a student’s college career and are vital to the success of New Student Orientation and move-in weekend. Orientation Leaders serve as role models,
mentors, and leaders to first-year and transfer students, assisting the student and their family with their transition into Beacon College. Orientation Leaders will support the transition of incoming students by educating incoming students on a wide variety of topics and by designing and leading programs/events the week before the start of classes. Time commitment over the week may vary based on need. Applicants should be prepared to work unconventional hours.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Participate in training before Orientation Week
- Help with the move-in process for new and returning students
- Create and facilitate programming/events during Orientation that highlight academic advice and social engagement
- Assist in programs hosted by other departments at Beacon College
- Assist in the physical setup and breakdown of orientation venues, ensuring spaces are prepared, welcoming, and compliant with accessibility requirements
- Spread Beacon pride and present the institution through a positive lens
- Represent Beacon College’s values and policies consistently, both on and off duty
- Actively support fellow Orientation Leaders by sharing best practices, offering assistance during peak stress times, and modeling collaborative behavior
- Manage individual and inter/intrapersonal conflict
- Act as a first point of contact during orientation activities, monitoring safety concerns and reporting incidents immediately to Campus Safety or professional staff
- Guide new students around campus and provide insight into the Beacon College experience
- Train and educate students on topics including, but not limited to academics, student engagement, peer engagement, and institutional engagement
- Recognize and support students who may be experiencing high levels of anxiety or homesickness
- Help students identify and learn about Life Abundant and the 5 Pillars of Holistic Success
- Document student concerns or engagement trends during the week to assist the department in post-orientation reporting and improvement
- Selected OLs will transition into Peer Mentor position during academic year
- Ability to shift from the high-energy, fast-paced environment of Orientation to the sustained, consistent, and individualized support required of a Peer Mentor during the academic term
- Other roles as identified by the Dean of Students
Skills and Qualifications
- Be enrolled as a full-time student at Beacon College (12 or more credit hours)
- Must be in good academic and judicial/conduct standing
- Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Must be comfortable in front of individuals and groups, both students and parents
- Possess the ability to follow directions with minimal supervision and direction
- Have strong communication and conflict resolution skills
- Active participation in campus clubs, organizations, or student employment, with the ability to articulate the benefits of student involvement to newcomers
- Attend Orientation Leader Training, both Fall 2026 and Spring 2027
- Perform all primary job functions during New Student Orientation Fall 2026 and Spring 2027
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in a formal or informal helping role. Previous experience with large-scale event execution. Priority hiring will be given to those attending Beacon College for the full 2026-27 academic year. The employee may be asked to perform duties not listed in the job description but which are considered to be essential to the employment
