The Math Lab allows students with learning differences the time and support needed to be successful in math. The Math Lab helps reduce anxiety levels in students by providing a semi self-paced course of study combined with individual instruction and support. The computerized Math Lab benefits the students by providing them with immediate feedback. It also assists students with memory deficits by allowing the repetition of material and providing continuous practice formats.
Math Technology
The Beacon College Math Lab utilizes the Web-based program ALEKS, which assesses students individually and continuously, ensuring that each student spends time on the math concepts that are most appropriate for him/her. Students engage with the material when it is most convenient for them, as the program is accessible 24 hours a day. The Math Lab is open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Professional instructors are available Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Peer tutors also provide assistance during Math Lab hours.
Math Lab Activities
Every week, a candy contest is held for the students and staff of Beacon College. A unique jar, sometimes donated by someone in the Beacon community, is filled with candy and put on display in the Math Lab every Monday. Faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to stop by the lab and submit a guess as to how many pieces of candy are in the container. On Friday, the person whose answer is closest to the correct number wins both the jar and the candy, and an announcement is sent out to the entire community. The weekly candy contest is fun while also providing great practice for exercising critical thinking and math skills.
