They might not give the Hell’s Angels a scare still a gang of Beacon College bikers (OK, bicycles) delivered a scary good performance for charity earlier this month in The Villages Regional Hospital Auxiliary Foundation’s 4th annual Hearts for Our Hospital Big Bike Challenge.
The Hearts for Our Hospital Bicycle Challenge supports The Villages Regional Hospital Auxiliary Foundation, which bills the event as a ride not a race to raise funds and awareness of the services the hospital provides, to improve patient care, and to fund medical education scholarships to area high school graduates who will be pursuing medical or allied health related degree programs.
The 10-member Beacon team joined some 400 cyclists on November 9 who could choose to bike 10, 20, 32, 64, or 100 miles along the country roads of Sumter, Lake, and Marion counties.
The longer distance rides (64 and 100 miles) departed The Villages and headed south circling Lake Panasoffkee in Sumter County and cruising through Wildwood with the 100-mile route going as far south as Webster, said Steven McDaniels, Beacon College director of fitness and recreation.
Here’s how Team Beacon finished:
- Steven McDaniels – 10 miles
- Simone Olsen (student) – 10 miles
- Rebecca Borowski (student) – 10 miles
- Keith Rhodes (student) – 10 miles
- Nate Judge – 10 miles
- Dan Graff (student) – 10 miles
- Jan Jackson (McDaniels’ wife) – 10 miles
- Sheri Waddill – 32 miles
- Dave Brown – 64 miles
- James Fleming – 100 miles
