The Learning Disabilities Association of America has selected a quartet of Beacon College psychology professors to present their paper on students with exceptionalities in February at the association’s annual conference.
The Learning Disabilities Association of America is a national confederation of parents, educators and other professionals who create avenues for people with learning differences to succeed, while working to whittle down the prevalence of learning disabilities going forward.
The group invited Drs. Linda Lucas, Andrea “A.J.” Marsden, Nicoletta “Nicki” Nance, and Richard Perrone to present their manuscript, “Making the Exception for Exceptional Students.”
Lucas serves as an assistant professor in the department of human services; Marsden and Nance are assistant professors of human services and psychology; Perrone is an assistant professor and chair of the departments of human services and psychology.
“For Beacon, this is … important,” Marsden said. “It demonstrates that we are pioneers in the LD [learning disabilities] field. … This shows that Beacon really is the best at what we do: Educating those with LDs.”
The four educators each contributed a section to the paper, which examines issues that faculty members face teaching classrooms populated by students with learning disabilities and how best to address them. Lucas unpacked mental and emotional disorders. Marsden unwound memory. Nance outlined behavioral issues. Perrone tackled attention and engagement.
The association has slated their hour-long presentation for opening day of its 54th Annual International Conference scheduled from Feb. 16-19, 2017 in Baltimore, Md.
“Individually, it is a big deal for each of us because it shows that we are experts in this area,” Marsden said. “We will be presenting to other educators and individuals wanting to learn more about educating students with learning disabilities.”
