TMS Disability Awareness Event

With diversity, equity, and inclusion at once becoming buzzwords and calls-to-action in the corporate and workaday world, Beacon College students and faculty continued the custom of communicating locally the value of neurodiversity by visiting Tavares Middle School last month for its annual disability Awareness Day.

This year, Drs. Brian Ogle, an assistant professor of anthrozoology, and Nicole Casillas, an assistant professor in the human services and psychology department, were joined by students Lexi Fuchs, Kristen Behrens, Meghan Woerner and Annabel DeSmet. They shared their experiences at Beacon, offering student and faculty perspectives. Each spoke to three groups of students for 20 minutes each.

The school’s disability Awareness Day provides for a solid day of inclusive learning, where myths are shattered, truths revealed, and disability etiquette honed through tips, discussions, and presentations.
