Beacon Grad Builds Legacy of Altruism Building Homes for Central Floridians
On most Saturdays for the past 11 years, Richard Weaver has been building houses for people in need.
The 2000 Beacon College alumnus, who has developed a reputation for being a whiz with the paintbrush, is a loyal volunteer for Habitat for Humanity Winter Park/Maitland in Florida.
When asked why he has devoted part of his weekend for so many years to the cause, Weaver said, “We all have the ability to be able to give back, and the responsibility to try to find at least some form of active public service to get involved in that really benefits our humanity. Our common humanity calls us to do something.”
Weaver loves the camaraderie at these work sites where the crew comes together. When the construction site goes from ground zero to a finished house, he said it’s magical seeing a family in need walk into their new home.
“I got involved in it, and it kind of got into my blood, and I just keep going,” Weaver said.
At the latest count, he estimates he has worked on 11 different houses — one a year — at the organization that recently celebrated the milestone of completing 60 houses.
“Rich comes almost every Saturday and doesn’t mind working outside or in the sun. He is always willing to do whatever is needed and that is one of the greatest things about Rich,” said Courtney Kropp, executive director of the Winter Park/Maitland Habitat affiliate.
Weaver, 53, of Longwood, has built a life around public service and helping others.
For his day job, he is the friendly face greeting customers at their appointments at Mercedes-Benz of Orlando where he works in Maitland. In the evenings, Weaver ushers at the Kia Center, helping patrons find their seats for the Orlando Magic games and concerts.
Weaver, a man of strong faith, is no stranger to volunteering with construction projects. He previously got involved at First United Methodist Church of Winter Park’s mission program. For 15 years, Weaver traveled to Costa Rica to build churches, schools, and homes. as well as working with children.
