The Secret Side of Mardi Gras: Carnival Balls, 1870-1920
Jennifer Atkins, Ph.D. researches dance in American popular culture and her book, Carnival Balls in New Orleans: The Secret Side of Mardi Gras, 1870-1920, received the 2017 Jules and Frances Landry Award. Her articles about social dance in New Orleans have appeared in: Walking Raddy: The Baby Dolls of New Orleans (UPM 2018) as well as scholarly journals. Jen also co-edited two anthologies, Perspectives on American Dance: The Twentieth Century and The New Millennium (University Press of Florida, 2018). Jen teaches dance studies at Florida State University and co-chairs the Dance & Culture Area of the American Culture/Popular Culture national conference.
