Beacon Launches Elementary Education Program to Address National Teacher Assistant Shortage
Beacon College will launch its new Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and Education Studies, (non-licensure) in spring 2026. The program is designed to prepare qualified teacher assistants to help address the national shortage in education support roles.
As the nation’s first accredited baccalaureate institution dedicated to educating students with learning differences, this academic program expansion offers Beacon students the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the field of education throughout the country. As of 2024-2025, more than 161,000 teacher assistant vacancies remained unfilled nationwide, many of those in elementary grades.
Beacon is committed to supporting Florida’s next generation of teacher assistants. Through this rigorous program, students will be able to immediately fill essential teaching assistant and support roles throughout the state and country. In creating a new academic offering, we designed a program that fits the educational style of our students while also providing highly qualified individuals to a workforce in immediate need.”
—Dr. Kevin Reilly, vice president of academic affairs
The Elementary Education and Education Studies is non-licensure and is pending approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Beacon’s regional accreditation body.
Through the Elementary Education and Education Studies program, students will focus on building foundational knowledge in literacy, child development, and instructional strategies. They will explore diverse learning styles and inclusive teaching practices, and gain real-world experience through internships focused on classroom planning, one-on-one student support, and behavioral management.
A co-curricular requirement of the program is certification as registered behavior technician. This 40-hour training program enhances student knowledge in assessment, skill acquisition, behavior reduction, documentation, and professional conduct. This certification will afford graduates a competitive advantage in the job market.
