Job Description
The Student A/V Assistant supports the Information Technology department by helping set up, operate, and troubleshoot audiovisual (A/V) equipment in classrooms, event spaces, and other campus locations. This position provides hands-on experience with professional A/V systems while ensuring smooth execution of academic and campus events. Students in this role work closely with IT/AV staff to maintain equipment readiness, assist campus users, and provide excellent customer service.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Support setup, connection, and operation of microphones, speakers, projectors, cameras, and other A/V equipment for classes, meetings, and campus events.
- Assist with classroom technology checks, A/V troubleshooting, and basic equipment testing.
- Provide on-site A/V assistance during events, presentations, and guest speaker sessions.
- Help with cable management, equipment inventory, and proper storage of A/V devices and accessories.
- Educate users on basic operation of classroom and event A/V equipment when needed.
- Collaborate with IT staff to resolve simple technical issues and escalate complex issues appropriately.
- Assist with maintaining A/V asset records, tracking equipment usage, and reporting issues.
Skills and Qualifications
- Reliability and punctuality, especially for events requiring early setup or late teardown.
- Strong customer service and communication skills to interact effectively with faculty, staff, students, and event organizers.
- Ability to follow instructions, work independently, and use good judgment when troubleshooting.
- Willingness to learn A/V systems, including microphones, sound systems, projection equipment, switching systems, and basic lighting controls.
- Basic technical aptitude; experience with A/V equipment is helpful but not required—training will be provided.
- Ability to lift and move A/V equipment as needed (e.g., speakers, cables, stands).
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience assisting with live events, A/V setups, or IT support.
- Comfort with basic troubleshooting of hardware and software related to A/V or computer peripherals.
- Interest in expanding technical skills in audio, video, and IT support.
