Robert & Jane Weiner Writing Center

SONY DSCThe purpose of the Writing Center is to help all students develop their critical thinking skills through a focus on a student-centered, process-driven model necessary for successful completion of college-level writing. Working closely with faculty members to understand their individual writing assignments, the Writing Center offers assistance and support for every phase of the writing process. Assistance is available through one-on-one consultations, as well as through the utilization of assistive reading and writing technology.

Assistive Technology

The assistive technology programs offered include Kurzweil SONY DSC3000, WordQ, Inspiration, and Editor. Kurzweil 3000, a text-to-speech program, allows students to follow the highlighted text of their textbooks as the program reads the book aloud. WordQ is a word prediction, text-to-speech program, which bolsters the spelling and word choice of students who may need writing assistance. Inspiration is a graphic organizer which allows visual learners to “draw their ideas” using graphics. Editor is a proofreading and style-checking software which invites writers to make corrections to writing based on the program’s suggestions.

Writing Center activities SONY DSCinclude Television Game Night, which provides an opportunity for students to socialize with peers while engaging in critical thinking through playing games such as Jeopardy, Family Feud, Wheel of Fortune, and Don’t Forget the Lyrics. The Writing Center also celebrates literary holidays, including Dictionary Day, National Day on Writing, and National Poetry Month. Additionally, the Writing Center holds writing contests in the categories of poetry, prose, and graphic storytelling every semester.
