In order to facilitate student success in college academic courses, Beacon College offers required College Success courses for all new students. The College also offers Developmental Education designed to provide instruction in the fundamental skills of English, reading, and mathematics, which are necessary for academic success at the college level. Placement in developmental coursework is for one semester.
The mission of the PASS Program is to improve student academic performance and retention by offering a supportive environment for intellectual development through academic assistance including one-on-one mentoring, supplemental instruction, student-led study groups, and special accommodations. PASS creates a safe and supportive learning environment in which students become active participants in developming the academic skills necessary to succeed in a higher educational setting.
The cornerstone of Educational Support Services is its Academic Mentoring Program. The ultimate goal of Academic Mentoring is to help Beacon College students become self-sufficient and successful learners. In order to foster success, each student receives one-on-one academic mentoring services, which are designed to enhance their own academic performance and develop skills for life-long learning.
Academic mentors are trained in a variety of mentoring methods, which are tailored to identify students’ individual learning styles and incorporates the following:
Supplemental Instruction is a student-centered academic assistance program that increases academic performance and retention through collaborative learning strategies. Instead of targeting ‘at risk’ students, the Supplemental Instruction Program targets traditionally difficult courses and provides regularly scheduled study sessions that offer all students an opportunity to discuss and process the course content in a proactive environment and before academic difficulties can occur.
The purpose of Student-Led Study Groups is to help students achieve academic success by attending out-of-class, peer student-led study sessions. These sessions are designed to allow students who were already successful in the class, to show the currently enrolled students strategies for completing course assignments and prepare for tests.
The purpose of the Beacon College Writing Center is to provide support for all students requiring assistance with writing, while helping them become more independent and confident writers. The Writing Center offers assistance with all aspects of writing, including brainstorming, organization, thesis, style, wording, and revision.
Beacon College facilitates the academic success of its students by providing special accommodations to students identified as at risk. These accommodations may include interactive computer-based programs, taped texts, test modifications and audio-visual aids.
