Circulation Services

Library Cards

All Faculty and Students are assigned a Beacon College Library patron number, which must be used to borrow materials from the Library. For your convenience, these “patron barcode numbers” are kept at the Circulation Desk. No materials may leave the Library without being checked out at the Circulation Desk.

Circulation periods vary according to the type of material and other considerations. Below are general checkout guidelines for each type and policies for overdue or damaged materials.

Books

Most books are available for checkout by students for a two-week period, with renewals possible.

Reference books, however, are generally available for use in the Library only, although exceptions can be made if the need arises. Ask at the Circulation Desk.

Audiovisual Materials

Most audiocassettes, videocassettes, and DVD’s are available for overnight checkout by students.

Periodicals

Magazines, journals and newspapers are available to students for use in the Library only. Special exceptions may be made for overnight checkout. Ask at the Circulation Desk.

Overdue Materials

Please note carefully the return date for borrowed materials. Students with overdue materials cannot borrow anything else from the Library until overdue items are returned. Overdue notices are sent via campus mail at least once a week.

Borrowers whose materials are “lost” and cannot be returned will be charged the item’s replacement cost and a processing fee. Materials not returned after the second weekly overdue notice will be considered “lost” and the borrower billed.

Any overdue books or unpaid fines at the end of the term will result in the withholding of grades and student transcripts.

Damaged Library Materials

Marking or underlining in Library books, or any other form of damage to Library materials, is prohibited. Replacement costs plus a processing fee will be charged for damaged Library materials.

Computers/Internet Access

Computers

The Library currently has two networked computers on its Local Area Network (LAN) which enable faculty and students to search our on-line Library catalog. In addition, three multimedia computers, housed in the Reference Room, are connected to the Internet and World Wide Web through the college-wide LAN. The Computer/Writing Lab, located next to the Mentoring area, has additional computers for student and faculty use, which are also part of the college wide LAN. Ask at the Circulation Desk for assistance in using these research tools.

Internet Access

Please review the “Beacon Internet and Computer Acceptable Use Guidelines”. Accessing the Internet on a Library workstation constitutes your acceptance of and agreement to abide by these Guidelines. Anyone found to be in violation of the Guidelines will be denied further use of the Library’s workstations for the remainder of the school term.

Cooperative Agreements

Beacon College maintains cooperative agreements with other area libraries so that our faculty, staff and students may use those facilities and borrow materials from them, subject to certain restrictions. Those libraries include:

Leesburg Public Library

Located at 204 North 5th Street, is within walking distance of campus and provides access to reference materials and extensive recreational reading/viewing/listening materials. Please check with the Beacon Library staff for information on obtaining a library card. Holdings of the Leesburg Public Library can be searched on the Internet at http://www.ci.leesburg.fl.us/library.

Lake-Sumter Community College

Located on U. S. Highway 441 east of Leesburg (near the mall), offers a diverse collection of books, government documents, periodicals, newspapers, and electronic resources. Please check with the Beacon Library staff for more information on LSCC resources and user fees. Holdings of the LSCC Library can be searched on the Internet at https://www.linccweb.org/.

Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loan services, allowing us to borrow materials from a wide range of libraries, are available to faculty, staff and students. Please be aware that there may be a fee from other libraries for this service, and it may take several days or weeks to receive the item requested. Beacon College participates in the Florida Library Network Statewide Ground Delivery System, which allows us to loan and receive items throughout the state via courier service. Currently our pickup and delivery date is Wednesday. Please ask at the Circulation Desk for forms and further information on Interlibrary Loan.

Photocopying Services

Photocopying is available in the Library at a cost of 10 cents per page. Transparencies are an additional 15 cents each. COPIES CAN BE MADE ON A CASH ONLY BASIS. SORRY -- NO CREDIT ALLOWED. The copier is located near the front entrance and accepts dimes only. Ask at the Circulation Desk for assistance with transparency and other copying.
