Books
The rapidly growing collection in your Library now includes over 20,000
items on a wide range of subjects. To find out which materials we have,
you may use the on-line “Card Catalog” (called OPAC - On-line
Public Access Catalog). It is located just outside the Reference Room.
You may search Beacon’s book and audiovisual collections by author,
title, or subject. Most materials are classified and arranged on the shelves
according to the Library of Congress Classification System.
Electronic Books
The Library provides access to 27,278 electronic books through netLibrary.
To access these you may sign up at www.netlibrary.com, and create a new
user account. After creating your account, you can access this collection
either in the Library, through the OPAC or via remote access. Electronic
books may be checked out a maximum of four hours each. Author, title,
and subject access to these books is also provided through the OPAC. If
you would like training, please arrange for a training period at the Circulation
Desk.
Periodicals
The Library currently subscribes to over 180 magazines and newspapers
in printed form, covering a wide range of subjects. Current periodicals
are housed in the middle of the Library and are arranged alphabetically
by title. Back (or older) issues are housed in the Periodicals Room. Printed
listings of our current periodical holdings are available in the Periodicals
Room, at the Circulation Desk and on the Library Homepage.
The Library also subscribes to Readers’ Guide to Periodical Literature,
which indexes many of the periodicals we receive. The Readers’ Guide
can be found near the Periodicals Room.
Other periodical articles can be accessed through the databases as described
below.
Databases
Beacon provides Internet access to a variety of research databases. Currently
available periodical databases (such as Electric Library, Gale databases,
Proquest, and FirstSearch) provide the full-text of thousands of scholarly
and general interest titles, with indexing and abstracting for thousands
more. Please ask at the Circulation Desk for information and assistance
on using these resources including required passwords. A listing of current
databases is available on the Library Homepage, in the Reference Room
and at the Circulation Desk.
Internet Access
Please review the “Beacon Internet and Computer Acceptable Use
Guidelines” Accessing the Internet on a Library workstation constitutes
your acceptance of and agreement to abide by these Guidelines. Anyone
found to be in violation of the Guidelines will be denied further use
of the Library’s workstations for the remainder of the school term.
Computers
The Library currently has two networked computers on its Local Area Network
(LAN) which enable faculty and students to search our on-line Library
catalog. In addition, three multimedia computers, housed in the Reference
Room, are connected to the Internet and World Wide Web through the college-wide
LAN. The Computer Lab, located next to the Mentoring area, has additional
computers for student and faculty use, which are also part of the college
wide LAN. Ask at the Circulation Desk for assistance in using these research
tools.
Audiovisual Materials
The Library’s growing collection of materials also includes curriculum-related
audiocassettes, videocassettes, DVD’s, and software on a variety
of subjects. Please ask at the Circulation Desk for more information on
our latest holdings. |
