Wicked! A Review

| Student Work, Theatre Review

On Tuesday, March 5th, a group of students from Beacon College went to see a play called Wicked at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Center in Orlando, FL. Wicked is the prequel to The Wizard of Oz, taking place before Dorothy arrived in Oz.

The play Wicked explains the origins of the witches of Oz and how the ruby slippers were created. Wicked explains how Elphaba, the Witch of the West, went from doing good to becoming the Wicked Witch of the West. Wicked also explains how Nessarose Elphaba’s sister became the Wicked Witch of the East and how she came to be governor of Munchkinland. We also learn how the monkeys became the Wicked Witch of the West’s flying monkeys, as well as the origins of the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion.

The last song of the first half, “Defying Gravity,” received thunderous applause because it was the showstopper of the entire show. This was a great theatrical performance, and I highly recommend it!
